The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for an Investigative Analyst for its Hate Crimes Unit in the Trial Division. In this position the Analyst is responsible for providing highly skilled analytical investigative support to the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Unit, its Investigators, and Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) prosecuting hate crimes in Manhattan.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Assisting ADAs in all aspects of investigations and trials (video surveillance reviews, jail call screenings, obtaining out-of-state records, case data synthesis)

- Reviewing defendant incident histories and reports to prepare analysis for potential hate crime charges.

- Routinely coordinating with ADAs, DANY investigators, and NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force (HCTF) detectives to track pending investigations and cases for updates.

- Answering the Office's Hate Crimes Hotline, advising callers, logging incidents, providing general information, and making referrals to appropriate agencies.

- Performing in-depth searches to investigate witnesses and possible suspects by utilizing government, public, and social media outlets.

- Creating a weekly memorandum outlining key updates on cases and investigations, hotline calls, community events, important press clips on hate crimes, and other related matters.

- Maintaining a database archive for all cases and investigations.

- Running statistics and maintaining this data on hate crimes in Manhattan by year, precinct, type of crime, etc.

- Drafting correspondence and legal documents.

- Assisting ADAs in the redaction and preparation of documents for e-discovery.

- Assisting ADAs with proofreading, cite checking, and locating files and documents.

- Testifying before the Grand Jury, at trial and other judicial proceedings.

- Performing related administrative and clerical tasks as assigned.

- Staying up to date on local, national, and international news regarding bias and hate crimes, trends, community events, etc.

- Assisting in the witness and victim interview process.

In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, all candidates must possess the following:

- Level 1 Bachelors degree from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.

- Level 2 - Bachelors degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.

- Level 3 - Bachelors degree from an accredited college and three (3) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.

*Masters degree can be substituted for years of experience. *

Preferred Requirements/Skills:

- 2 - 4 years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent based on the level.

- Excellent organizational and creative problem-solving skills are essential.

- Detail-oriented with the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).

- Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems.

- Ability to work independe ntly with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.

- Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.

- Ability to interact and communicate (orally and in writing) with all levels of staff, court representatives, law enforcement representatives and witnesses.

- Fluency in a foreign language (particularly Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese or Fukienese) is helpful though not necessary.

- Advanced knowledge of criminal justice investigative internet search techniques and databases, including, but not limited to, CLEAR and eJustice.

- Proficiency in Internet search strategies and techniques, including preserving Facebook and other social media profiles.

- Ability to communicate investigative results to other team members and to testify in court.

- Excellent interpersonal, time-management, writing, and communication skills. Must work well as part of a team.

- Ability to take initiative and work independently.

Additional Information:

- Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least 1 year in their current position and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
