A Standardized Patient (SP) is a person of any age, race, or gender who has been trained to portray an actual patient by accurately and consistently simulating an illness or other physical and/or mental health finding. Additionally, SPs are trained to provide constructive feedback to all levels of nursing students about their professional and communication skills. Essential Functions and Responsibilities include working directly with the Executive Director of Simulation and Standardized Patients, APRN/DNP Simulation Center Director, and the Nursing Undergraduate Simulation Center Director to support the simulation learning environment for LUSON students across all programs, as well as the faculty and staff participating in simulation or nursing laboratory curriculum and activities. The role requires reliability, punctuality, ability to work with others respectfully, good communication, and interpersonal skills. Interest in furthering the education of advanced practice nursing students and undergraduate nursing students is important. Participation is voluntary and compensated. Completion of training does not guarantee participation; SPs are matched based on facility and faculty needs. Training and simulations are non-invasive. SPs wear patient gowns and must reenact the same patient condition consistently for each student, reacting based on student actions without favoritism or discrimination. Confidentiality of case materials and student encounters is mandatory. Video and audio recording are used during encounters for review. SPs must sign the Simulation Center Use Agreement and FERPA form and work effectively as a team member embracing Liberty University's mission. Minimum qualifications include professionalism, excellent personal communication, and computer skills. Preferred qualifications include excellent memorization skills and comfort working with doctoral and undergraduate nursing students.
