Job Description: St. Ann Church in Parsippany, New Jersey, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Music Director to lead and oversee the parish’s music ministry. This part-time position is responsible for coordinating music for all liturgical services with pastor and pastoral team, for accompanying all weekend Masses, and arranging for and conducting rehearsals with the Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME). The Music Director will oversee the Adult Choir Director and Children’s Choir Director, training and scheduling cantors, and maintaining the musical instruments. This role requires a strong background in liturgy and music, ensuring that all musical elements enhance the worship experience in line with Catholic traditions. Key Responsibilities: Accompany Weekend Masses: Provide musical accompaniment for all three weekend Masses, playing organ or piano as needed. Music Selection and Liturgy Coordination: Select and arrange music for all Masses, ensuring the music aligns with the liturgical themes and enhances the worship experience. Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME): Coordinate the scheduling and rehearsal of the CME, ensuring adequate preparation for the ensemble’s performances at two weekend Masses per month. Adult and Children’s Choir Coordination: Coordinate choirs in collaboration with the Adult Choir and Children’s Choir Directors, ensuring effective scheduling and preparation for weekend Masses and special liturgical events. The Music Director is not responsible for rehearsing with the choirs outside of pre-Mass rehearsals. Cantor Training and Scheduling: Train, cultivate, and schedule cantors for weekend Masses and special services. Additional Services: Oversee and provide music for additional services such as weddings, funerals, holy days, and special liturgical events, as needed. Weddings and funerals are compensated separately from regular duties. Instrument Maintenance: Ensure proper maintenance of musical instruments, including the organ, piano, and other equipment. Collaborate with the pastor and staff on decisions regarding the sound system and any musical instrument replacement or improvements. Collaboration: Work closely with the pastor and pastoral team, cantors, choirs directors, choirs, accompanists, and other liturgical leaders to ensure a seamless and unified music ministry. Administrative Duties: Maintain music ministry records, including scheduling, relevant billing, communications with musicians, and ensuring the proper maintenance of music resources and equipment. Qualifications: Strong background in liturgy, with a solid understanding of Catholic worship traditions. Proficiency in organ or piano with the ability to play in various musical styles, including traditional and contemporary church music. Experience in directing and coordinating music ministries, with a particular focus on choir and ensemble management. Ability to select and arrange music for Masses and liturgical events. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to train and mentor cantors effectively. Experience in managing a budget and maintaining musical resources and instruments. Ability to work well with both volunteers and professional musicians. Availability for additional services such as weddings, funerals, and holy days, with compensation provided for these extra events. Compensation: Additional compensation will be provided for weddings, funerals, and other special services outside of regular Masses and holy days.
